SediMeter SM2A
SediMeter LogDator

SediMeter™ instrument

State of the art sediment monitoring

The sedimeter measures a vertical turbidity profile through the bottom using 36 near infrared optical backscatter detectors (NIR OBS). It can be used to monitor erosion, sedimentation, siltation, scour, resuspension, and even near-bed sediment transport if combined with other measurements.

The sedimeter sensor has 350 mm active length, and a level resolution of 0.1 mm. It uses our own LogDator data logger with all features: USB connectivity, display and control stick, RS-485 ready, MMC/SD memory card slot, and 2 MB built in memory for 4096 measurements.

The instrument is normally mounted in sediment using an anchor with a holder tube. This holder is screwed down in mud and sand with the help of a handle. The sedimeter sensor also works upside down, so another mounting option for this instrument is to bury the logger in a 55 mm diameter hole. This method, which may be preferable on hard bottoms, has the added advantage of giving a better FTU accuracy by not requiring a holder tube. Ohter uses include to deploy it in a vessel for measuring sedimentation rate, or in a flume for lab experiments.

The LogDator - the computer of the SediMeter - has two channels for optional analog sensors. We offer standard pressure and light sensors, but several other sensors have been interfaced (contact us for special requests). The options must be ordered with the instrument. The optional sensors can be sampled up to 84 times per measurement, with a rate of 0.5 - 50 Hz. This allows precise averages, as well as fluctuations, wave periods, and so on to be estimated in the post-processing software.

The LogDator has a built-in temperature sensor with good accuracy for long term monitoring. If measuring faster temperature changes, or near continuously, we recommend the optional faster temperature sensor.

The instrument can be equipped with UW bulkhead connectors and connected to a real-time monitoring network. The network uses the industry-standard RS-485 physical layer which, unlike RS-232, allows many instruments on the same cable (up to 255). It also allows much longer cable runs. Data can be stored locally on the instrument and retrieved using the cable. Alternatively, the instrument can be polled in real time from a dedicated computer, and the data can even be made available over the internet in real time.

SediMeter SM2A

SediMeter™ kit

Ideal for lab and field research, renting, etc.

This kit is based on the SM2A instrument, and includes holder, handle, batteries, software, USB cable, memory card, and a case. The watertight storage and transportation case provides optimal protection against mechanical and thermal shock. It has two handles, and wheels on one end so it can be pulled like a cabin bag. A pressure release valve automatically releases the overpressure during air transport. The components are packed in two layers inside.

SediMeter SM2N

SediMeter™ network-only

For cost-effective real-time sediment monitoring

Made for remote operation by cable only, not for stand-alone logging. It features one RS-485 underwater connector for real-time monitoring. The serial connection can also be used to set up the logger and download data without retrieving the instrument. It has 2 MB built-in memory for temporary storage of up to 4096 measurements.

A cable with an underwater connector, and an RS-485 adapter or port, is required for underwater use. If more than one instrument is used in a network, all instruments except the last must have a second UW connector.

This model includes a barebone LogDator without display, USB, batteries, or memory card slot. The price is for the instrument only.

LogDator™ 2" under-water logger

Everything except the sedimeter sensor

This is the same logger as in the SediMeter™ SM2A, except that it lacks the patented sedimeter sensor. It includes a built-in thermometer, and can be equipped with optional pressure and light sensors, as well as bulkhead connectors for an RS-485 network. It can also be equipped with a faster thermometer. Use separately, or as a complement to SediMeters.

Except for the built-in thermometer, the LogDator records only raw data, and all conversions are made in the post-processing software. The calibration is thus fully transparent to the user, and if he so wishes, he can edit the coefficients and even change equation.

As in the SediMeter, the analog channels for optional sensors can be sampled in bursts of up to 84 values per sample, at a rate of 0.5 to 50 Hz. This allows wave periods to be estimated in the SediMeter PC software, and highly precise averages to be calculated.

The logger can be attached to a rod with 20 mm or 3/4" diameter using the yellow finger screw. On soft bottoms, the same holder and anchor can be used with this logger as with the SediMeter.

LogDator™ network temperature sensor

This device is designed specifically for real time monitoring of temperature profiles. It consists of a barebone LogDator (as in SediMeter SM2N) in a pipe with 1-1/2" outer diameter, and with an UW bulkhead connector in each end for an RS-485 network. A holder is provided for suspending it along a rope, from a buoy to an anchor. It can be operated in both real-time mode and as a remotely controlled logger, with memory for 4096 measurements.

The standard temperature sensor, calibrated to 0.3ºC, has a response time in the order of minutes which is enough in most circumstances. For quicker response, order the optional fast thermometer.
